3G/4G Development in China January 24-30

- China Unicom recently announced that the company and Ericsson entered into an agreement, whereby the latter will supply China Unicom GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) solution in more than 10 provinces across China in 2011, according to a press release by Ericsson, adding that the company has begun the deployment. The completion of GPON infrastructure is expected to help China Unicom to roll out FTTH (Fiber to the Home) and FTTB (Fiber to the Building) across China at faster speeds and lower costs while help the company tap the growing demand of data traffic and triple-play services among Chinese consumers.

 

- China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) confirmed on January 27 that six Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Xiamen but exclusive of Beijing, have begun large-scale technology trials, the Sina News reported on January 28.
